One final resting place. A story of courage, sacrifice and lives cut tragically short.

They came from every corner of New Zealand, from towns, farms and cities thousands of miles from the battlefields of Europe. They were ordinary young men with extraordinary dreams: to fly, to serve their country and to do their bit in the fight against Nazi Germany.

Leaving behind parents, wives, children and sweethearts, these young men crossed oceans to join the Allied air war. Some would fly operations over occupied Europe, facing enemy fighters, flak and the ever-present threat of death. Others would lose their lives during training accidents over the British countryside, never reaching the operational squadrons for which they had worked so hard.

Their journeys would ultimately lead to Stonefall Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, where twenty-three Royal New Zealand Air Force airmen were laid to rest, far from the homeland and loved ones to whom they would never return.

Through painstakingly reconstructed personal histories, The Stonefall Kiwis brings these men back to life. From their childhoods and family backgrounds to their training, friendships, hopes and final flights, their stories reveal the human cost of a war fought across continents and oceans. Behind every headstone lies a life once filled with promise, a family left to grieve and a future that would never be fulfilled.

Drawing together individual tragedy and collective remembrance, this is a tribute to twenty-three young New Zealanders whose courage and sacrifice must never be forgotten. Their war is over, but their stories deserve to be told.

Kate Moira Spencer was born in Bristol and is a British-New Zealand author, journalist, playwright and director.
